As the United States enters the fourth quarter of 2009, economic growth is slowly starting but unemployment is still on the rise. Leaders in Washington are discussing what else can be done to stimulate the economy. However, a majority of stimulus dollars haven’t been spent yet, a topic Onvia CIO Eric Gillespie discussed in an interview with Marketplace Radio on October 6th.
“Only about $30 billion has actually been awarded to contractors,” Gillespie noted, adding, “that doesn’t actually mean $30 billion has been spent.” The time it takes for contractors to hire workers and begin work is a factor in how quickly stimulus dollars enter the economy.
Hundreds of billions in economic stimulus funding still remain to be spent on projects such as renewable energy, healthcare IT, and public safety programs. To listen to the full Marketplace broadcast featuring Gillespie, click here.
